Definition of Limiting Oxygen Index(LOI)
The limiting oxygen index (LOI) is the minimum concentration of oxygen, expressed as a percentage, that will support combustion of a polymer. It is measured by passing a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen over a burning specimen, and reducing the oxygen level until a critical level is reached. [1]
LOI values for different plastics are determined by standardized tests, such as the ISO 4589 and ASTM D2863.
The differences bwtween several types of fibers.
Name | LOI |
cotton | 18 |
nylon | 24 |
polyester | 21 |
aramid | 28 |
High oxygen index indicates that the material is not easy to burn, low oxygen index indicates that the material is easy to burn, generally considered oxygen index <22 belong to flammable materials, oxygen index between 22---27 is combustible material, oxygen index >27 is refractory material.
The LOI of Drotex flame retardant fabric is more than 28,if no doubt your first choice as protective clothing. Why not Contact us for more details?
