How to Clean Flame Retardant Clothing

Flame retardant clothing has been chemically treated to help reduce the flammability of the material. While the treated clothing is not fireproof, the chemical treatment does lessen the chances of clothing catching fire. Flame retardant clothing is frequently used for occupational purposes, and federal guidelines have required children's sleepwear to be flame retardant since 1972. Repeated washings diminish the effectiveness of the flame retardant, therefore it is advised to follow the laundering directions on the clothing labels.

Things You'll Need to do:

Mild laundry detergent

Fill the washing machine with tepid water. Recommended temperature is 105 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Add a mild detergent to the water. Avoid strong chemicals or water softening agents, such as vinegar, baking soda or fabric softening agents to the load.

Set the washing machine on "gentle" agitation, if possible.

Remove clothing from the washing machine.

Line dry the clothing or dry the clothing in a dryer set to the "low heat" setting. Do not use fabric softener sheets.

Remove from the dryer promptly to avoid wrinkling.

Tips & Warnings

The clothing tag may instruct you to avoid using soap as a detergent. Laundry detergent is not a soap and is therefore safe to use.

Chlorine bleach is safe to use for synthetic flame retardant clothing, but avoid using it for flame retardant cotton material.

Avoid hot water above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, as it may cause the clothing to shrink.
